In this UE4 tutorial we will learn how to create a simple waypoint system with markers.
This kind of UI element is usually found in RPGs and open world games. Waypoints, markers and compasses are the easiest way of offering the player enough information about their position in the game and their objective's position and they are a must for any game that consists of a lot of world exploration and doesn't aim to be over-realistic.

The system implemented in this tutorial can be developed further and I highly encourage you to do so. While you can use it as it is in a game, there's a lot more to cover design-wise, and even on the technical side.
For example, you can add to each marker the distance to its object and maybe highlight the object through walls if the player is close enough to it, both being very easily achievable in Unreal Engine 4.
